Due to the success of the building upgrade at the Barrington Place the owners proceeded with upgrading the Avord Towers boiler system. Kevin Thurston of Thurston Engineering Services ( Project Engineer and Certified Energy Manager ) was once again commissioned because of the previous projects success. The existing system of Avord Towers consisted of two fire tube boilers that were heating convector baseboard.

It only made sense for the owners to once again commission Bob Cowan from Key West Engineering Ltd. for the mechanical layout, heat-loss and retrofit proposal. National Refrigeration Ltd. impressed the building owners with the previous install, so they too were hired again to replace the boiler plant.

The nature of the hybrid system, allows the initial investment for the boiler plant to be a less because you are only purchasing one condensing boiler versus purchasing two condensing boilers. The hybrid system consists of a one condensing and one non condensing boiler, a Low Loss header ( which acts as an hydraulic brake ) was added allowing the system to increase the delta T which aids in condensing. This project was supplied with a Vitocrossal CT3-57 with a Wieshaupt fully modulating burner and a Vitorond VD2-560 with a
Riello fully modulating burner.

The Avord Towers was able to decrease their gas consumption by 27% in the first 6 months of operation ( see independent analysis on back page for more detailed information ). This is just a start of the savings, this system has only been through one heating season. This investment will benefit the owners in the long run, because of increased energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly design. A Viessmann system allows you to accomplish a more energy efficient future and helps lower overall operating costs for the life of the boiler
plant.

One heating season is nearly complete with the new hot water heating system boilers at Avord Tower

Avord Towers, Saskatoon, SK – Boiler Post-Retrofit Report

s (a 17,000 m2 office building located in Downtown Saskatoon, SK). Preliminary gas savings are very encouraging as savings in the $12,000 range have been realized so far. Two, 3,348 MBTU Saskatoon Boilers were replaced with a Viessmann Hybrid hot water heating system configuration. One, Vitocrossal CT3-57 condensing boiler (2,160 MBTU) and one, Vitorond VD2-560 near condensing boiler (2,275 MBTU), complete with a low loss header, were installed.

A comparison to the average costs and consumptions for the 2007-2008 and the 2008-2009 heating seasons indicate that savings are over $12,000 for the 2009-2010 heating season. The data has been normalized for weather (Heating Degree Days) and for the current cost per m3 for natural gas for this facility ($0.29).

Referring to the blue coloured bars for Oct-Mar, a distinct reduction in the consumption per HDD is evident. In fact, in the six months these boilers have been operating, there has been a 27.6% reduction in natural gas consumption.
